What is Mesothelioma ?

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that attacks the mesothelium, which is protective lining that covers the body's internal organs, including the heart, lungs, and abdomen. Mesothelioma is an extremely rare form of cancer that has been conclusively linked to asbestos exposure. Most diagnoses of mesothelioma are due to workplace exposure to asbestos fibers or particles. The risk of asbestos-related diseases, including mesothelioma, increases with heavier exposure to asbestos and longer exposure time. However, some individuals may develop mesothelioma after brief or indirect exposure. For example, family members may develop mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos fibers on their spouse’s clothes or hair. Learn more about mesothelioma

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is highly resistant to heat, electrical, and chemical damage. Asbestos was widely used in buildings, and in many industrial products, including cement, pipes, brake linings, ceiling tiles, roof shingles, flooring products, sealants, textiles, and insulation. Asbestos is a highly toxic material and a recognized carcinogen. Asbestos minerals have a tendency to separate into microscopic-size particles that can remain in the air and are easily inhaled or swallowed. Inhalation or ingestion of tiny asbestos particles can cause serious health problems or illnesses, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Learn more about asbestos exposure

Pleural Effusion

Sometimes referred to as "water on the lungs" or "fluid in the chest," pleural effusion is an abnormally excessive amount of fluid that accumulates in the pleural cavity, the area surrounding the lungs. Excessive fluid in the pleural cavity can impair breathing by limiting expansion of the lungs during inhalation. Pleural effusion can result due to a number of medical conditions including congestive heart failure, pneumonia, and less commonly, lung cancer and the asbestos-related cancer known as mesothelioma.
